Just as King Leonidas proclaims in “300″ after first battle with the Persians, it was “a good start” as the New York Rangers claimed victory in Game 1 of this 2008 – 09 season. Rangers defeat the Tampa Bay Lightning 2 – 1 earlier today in a game played in Prague (Czech Republic).
Goals were by Markus Naslund (Impressive performance) late in Period 2 to open the NHL season and the winner potted by Brandon Dubinsky with a PP goal with just over 5 mins remaining in the 3rd. The Lighting had tied the game earlier in the period. With the exception of the first few minutes, when Lundquist had to stop semi breakaways by St. Louis and Lecavalier, the Rangers dominated this game and outshot the Lightning 41 – 21 in the game.
By nature, I am not a big believer in stats as a deciding factor. I truly believe one or two plays a game decide every game of every sport. Had the Lightning cashed in 2 goals early, they probably would have held on to win this game. Henrik Lundquist is easily the team MVP….Glad that Chris Drury was named caption too (25th in Rangers history). Was inevitable and hope he can step up his game this year.
Game 2 against these same TB tomorrow at 12 Noon and chance to start 2 – 0 for the first time in likely 10 years. As a side note, TB Coach Barry Melrose was back on an NHL bench after being our favorite color commentator in the booth for 13 years.
No more mullet and we wish him luck, starting game 3 when they are back in the states….

Rangers played a pretty good game last night. Opening night at MSG! Woo Whooo! I love the start of hockey season in the Big Apple! It was great to see the cast and crew in 427. Even Mike was on time! It was nice to see most of our friends had renewed their season tickets!
My boy Brandon Dubinsky had a pretty good night with a goal and two assists. While not overworked by 29 shots, I thought Henrick
saw a lot more rubber courtesy of turnovers in our end.
The biggest surprise was Aaron Voros! He could be the huge jam the net ala Tim Kerr guy we’ve been waiting for. Dury, and Gomez were excellent too!
The building was rockin’ last night and the fans were in good spirits in spite of $9.25 beers!!! Jeez Louise!!! They’re not even in gold plated goblets!!!
Rock
On the negatve side what the hell happened to Rosival? He looked lost out there. I hope he gets it together. And the question of the night was why was Peter Prucha a healthy scratch, there are many trade rumors floating around him. I would recommend that Pru check out the tapes of fellow diminutive Marc Pavelish.
Just skip the part about fishing in Minnesota!
